Planning on going camping this summer?

Here are some ideas to make it more comfortable/fun

Use foam floor tiles for a softer, more comfortable tent floor.

Cut up a straw and fill the pieces up with antibiotic ointment or toothpaste for single-use packets.

Use a lighter to seal up the ends.
Free samples are great here also!

Make travel coffee bags out of coffee filters and dental floss.

Place a scoop of coffee grounds into a coffee filter and tie it up with dental floss. When you’re ready to brew, just make it like you would make tea in a teabag!
Those free samples of coffee are great for camping too!

Make single-use soap leaves from a bar of soap and a vegetable peeler.

Use an empty laundry detergent dispenser as a hand-washing station.

Just fill it up with water.

Try roasting Starburst. Or anything else to try.

Keep the kids busy with a scavenger hunt.

Bring microfiber towels — they’re super absorbent and lightweight.

Weekly Writing idea for kids

I will be sharing one weekly writing idea for kids each week for the summer. Let them write whatever form they like (or you choose). Then you can send it in the mail, put them in a binder to save, or whatever else you come up with.

3 things to do this summer with your kids!

Carve a watermelon! Parental assistance may be necessary. There are certainly some cute ideas here–your watermelon will be the topic of conversation at any picnic!

Have a Silly String fight, a water balloon fight or a pillow fight. Have some raucous fun! Make sure you get permission first.

Build a fort. This can be in your living room–made out of blankets, or in a tree with wood and braces. If actual construction is involved, you will need an adult’s supervision–and depending on where you live, you might even need a building permit or approval from a Homeowner’s Association. But think how much fun it will be!

Healthy Tip – Thyme

If your like me, Thyme is always in your spice cupboard. I tend to grow and dehydrate the plant as well, partially for the usefulness and partially because it smells nice.

The plant grows as a perennial and is more suited to a hot and sunny environment. It’s definitely an excellent source of vitamin K, iron and manganese. Thyme can effectively assist in ridding the body of different toxic elements causing health conditions such as respiratory, digestive and acne problems.

Another easy to use Thyme other than just in cooking is topically. When thyme is applied topically on the skin, it helps to alleviate pain and irritation owing to insect bites and stings. Topical application of the herb is also effective in relieving conditions, such as rheumatic pains and throbbing as well as sciatica (a painful disorder extending from the hip down the back of the thigh and surrounding area). The herb is also useful in treating fungal infections and scabies as well as lice. It is often prescribed for people having athlete’s foot, ringworm and thrush (a disease caused by parasitic fungus). When the infusion prepared with thyme leaves is blended with bath water, it functions as refreshment.

Thyme is widely used to add spice to seafood dishes like mussels and clams, tomato sauces as well as vegetables like onions, potatoes, carrots, peppers, eggplant and zucchini. Garden thyme and clam and fish chowders go well together. The aromatic herb also blends perfectly with onion, garlic, wine and brandy to add essence to different types of meats, inclusive of roasts and sausages, wild game, and even poultry. The herb is more effective when used in preparation of dishes that require prolonged and leisurely cookery. The flavor of garden salads increase manifold if you add fresh thyme leaves and flowers to it. Fresh or dried leaves of this aromatic herb may also be added to butter and cooking oil to enhance essence.

You may prepare a cup of stimulating herbal tea by permeating about 15 ml or three teaspoonful mashed fresh thyme leaves in 250 ml or one cup of boiling water. Cover the container soon after adding the thyme leaves and allow it to soak for around 10 minutes before filtering the tea. Add honey to make the infusion sweet as well as enjoyable.

Healthy Tip of the Week-Headaches

No matter how bad your headache is these things are both safe even while pregnant (for most people) and much cheaper than a doctors visit.

One tip I was given when pregnant was to use a pressure point located on both sides of your head. Place your thumbs at the base of your skull and locate the depressions about two inches from the midline of your neck. Press and massage these areas with both thumbs in circular movements for 1 to 2 minutes. I have to say this one helped me enormously.


Magnesium-rich foods

Magnesium-rich foods can help soothe headaches by relaxing blood vessels. To beat headaches before they strike, eat a diet rich in magnesium-rich foods such as almonds, bananas, avocados, spinach, and brown rice.

Calcium-rich foods
A pounding head may be a sign that your body is deficient of calcium. Since the brain depends on calcium to function efficiently, it’s important to consume calcium-rich foods regularly and particularly when you have headache. Some foods loaded with calcium include yogurt, sesame seeds, almonds, and dark leafy greens such as collard greens, spinach and kale.

Omega 3-rich foods
Omega 3-rich foods are excellent for healing headaches because the essential oils reduce the inflammation that happens when the blood vessels in your head become inflamed and constrict, the result being headache pain. Thus it’s important to consume Omega 3-rich foods regularly, and particularly when you have a headache. Some foods rich in omega-3s include fish such as herring, salmon, tuna, shrimp, halibut, red snapper or sardines, walnuts, olive oil, and ground up flax seeds or flax oil. Flax oil or seeds can be mixed with fruit juice and consumed as a drink to help make them more palatable.

Vitamin E-rich foods
Vitamin E is important to consider when facing a headache because when it is present in your body, it works to promote circulation and healthy, normal blood flow, which can ease headache pain. Therefore, it’s important to make sure to eat Vitamin E-rich foods when you feel a headache coming on. Foods rich in vitamin E are almonds, papaya, kiwi, red bell peppers, and broccoli.

Foods with high water content
Since being dehydrated can exacerbate headaches, re-hydrating becomes critical to getting headache relief. Some foods with high water content include watermelon, melons such as honeydew and cantaloupe, cucumber, berries, lettuce, and soup.

Superfood headache cure: ginger
Ginger is a superfood that’s considered to be one of the most effective headache cures. Like omega-3 rich foods, ginger has the power to reduce the inflammation associated with headaches. Making ginger tea from raw ginger slices is an easy way to make a stand-alone headache cure. You can also add ginger to many recipes to make your favorite recipes into more powerful headache soothing superfood.

Another trick if you are a frequent sufferer of migraines is to take feverfew a few times a week, caution it is a blood thinner. You can take it as tea or a pill.
