What is a Catalina

When you look at coupon match ups for stores they may mention Catalina’s.

A Catalina is a coupon that prints at the register after you are done paying. It prints out of a machine next to the register, after your receipt prints. It is usually triggered by an item that was purchased in that transaction. Most the time you have to buy a certain number of times, like buy 10 items and get a $10 Catalina. It also can be triggered when you buy a dollar amount like $20 of participating products and get a $5 Catalina back. They offer incentives good on your next shopping trip to that retailer, A few different things can print, an ad, a coupon but what most of us are looking for is a coupon for a dollar amount off your next purchase, that you can use like cash.

Catalina Category Marketing (CCM) rewards purchases of promoted products with “catalinas”, also known as “check-out coupons”. These offer incentives good on your next shopping trip to that retailer. There is usually a 4-week window on any given program/incentive promotion.f

If you ever have a problem with the store not printing your Catalina, save your receipt and call the Catalina company Their toll free numbers are 1-(888) 322-3814 or 1-888-8COUPON (1-888-826-8766)

It is VERY important that you get to the $ amount BEFORE tax, or your Catlina WILL NOT print.Once you have hit your required $ amount before tax, you can then use coupons to bring your total down.

Each store is a little different in how you can use these coupons

Most but not all stores will only take there own Catalina’s.

Walgreen’s Catalina tips:

At Walgreen’s they call a Catalina a Register Reward or RR
Will not honor after it expires, so watch your expiration dates close
Walgreen’s will ONLY take their own Catalina
You can pay with more than one Catalina as long as the Catalina total does not go over the amount due. They will not give cash back. But you have to make sure you have more items than coupons, and they consider a Catalina coupon. Example- If you try to pay for a your two toothbrushes with 2 MFR coupons and a Catalina the register will beep at you……it is because the Walgreen’s only allows one MRF coupon per item. They count the Catalina as a MFR coupon. If you have more coupons than items, some times you have to use “filler” item, find something cheap like a 10 cent pencil. Some cashiers know why the register beeps for this problem……. but most of them don’t. If you get one that does not know, They get flustered a will tell you that your coupon is not good……It is always so important to be an informed shopper!
DO NOT use your Catalina to pay for the same item or another Catalina WILL NOT print.
Make sure you only buy the amount of items the sale says- example if the sale says buy 5 fruit snacks and get back a $2 Catalina, but if you buy 10 fruit snack all at once you will still only get 1 $2 Catalina to print. It is best to buy 5 at a time and each set of 5 you will get $2 back.

Camping Style Crescent Rolls

A great camping idea: Once you have your fire going and you are waiting for it to burn down to a pile of embers, carve your stick to roast your crescent roll on. Look for a nice stick that is rather thick, about as thick as your picky or so, and has a Y bend in it. After slicing the bark off the Y and the handle, “braid” the crescent roll around the Y. This will make the dough thinner than if it is simply wrapped around the stick, reduces cooking time and allows it to cook evenly and doesn’t leave you with a gross sticky mass of uncooked dough in the center. Yuck.

Dandeleions Part 2

Serving Suggestions for Dandelion Greens

■ Combine greens with walnuts, apples and goat cheese, and dress with olive oil (5 parts), apple cider vinegar (3 parts), Dijon mustard (1 part), honey, salt and pepper (to taste).

■ Steam greens 5 to 10 minutes and add butter, salt and pepper. Serve on toasted peasant bread topped with a fried egg.

■ Make a calzone: Sauté greens and mushrooms and season with salt and pepper. Roll out homemade or store-bought pizza dough and cut into 10-inch circles. Spoon greens onto half, top with cheddar, fold over to form a half-moon and seal edge. Bake at 500 degrees until golden, about 10 minutes.

■ Bake a dandelion greens quiche by swapping out the spinach in a spinach quiche recipe.

■ Throw a handful on any green salad.

■ Make a wilted salad: Fry a few slices of bacon until crisp. Remove bacon, pat dry and crumble. Sauté chopped red onion in bacon fat for a couple minutes and whisk in a dash of olive oil, red wine vinegar and maple syrup. Toss the warm dressing with the dandelion greens and bacon.

■ Brew dandelion root tea: Dig up the root of a large dandelion plant, wash it, chop it into small pieces, boil it and let it steep for an hour. Strain and serve with honey. Most herbalists believe that the beneficence of such of tea is almost boundless.
Make dandelion tea by brewing 1 ounce of dandelion root or leaves in 1 pint of water for 15 minutes.

■ Throw a handful on any green salad.

Wild Green & Dandelion Omelet

• 2 to 3 fresh local eggs
• Sweet peppers, chopped into small squares
• 1 to 2 handfuls fresh dandelion greens, cut up
• About 3 sprigs lamb’s quarters, ripped up
• 1 to 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
• 1 sprig tarragon, chopped
• About 3 chives, cut up
• Goat cheese
• Salsa

1. Scramble the eggs in a bowl with a fork. Pour into a heated oiled or sprayed pan. After about 1 minute add the sweet peppers, dandelion greens and lamb’s quarters. Then, after 1 to 2 minutes later, add the garlic, tarragon and chives.

2. Flip one side of the omelet to cover the other half of it. Turn off the heat and cover with goat cheese (or another cheese based on personal taste), salt, pepper and salsa. ENJOY!!

Dandelions Part 1

I have decided to do a short series on Dandelions after discovering that most people just think of them as a weed in their yard.

Steamed dandelion greens are delicious on their own with olive oil, lemon juice and salt, and they make an excellent addition to soups, pastas, egg dishes and more.

Harvesting Dandelion Greens

I think most kids have picked a bouquet of Dandelions

To harvest: Use a stout, sharp knife and plunge it straight down next to the young green leaves until you reach the plant’s crown. Cut across, slicing the crown from the root, but leave the dandelion bunch intact to facilitate cleaning. Shake out each bunch as you cut it to loosen dirt and debris and pull off the outside damaged or yellow leaves. Swish the bunch through several buckets of cold water until no dirt is apparent in the water. Then bring the bunch indoors to finish preparing it for use.

The Benefits of Dandelion Greens

Dandelions pack a punch in terms of vitamins and minerals, with more vitamin A than spinach and significant amounts of potassium.

Dandelion leaves owe their bitterness to organic compounds known as sesquiterpene lactones, which have been demonstrated to have diuretic and cleansing effects. Herbalists swear by these compounds’ ability to isolate toxins in the body and flush them out.
